MARK UTTI

Partners for Curiosity
Mark Utti
Mark Utti, an entrepreneurial powerhouse from the Oregon Coast, embodies the principle that curiosity and seizing opportunities where others might only see challenges is crucial for business success. Mark’s approach to business is fueled by a persistent curiosity and a habit of asking, “What if?” This mindset has enabled him to transform countless ideas into thriving enterprises over the years.

Raised in Astoria in the picturesque setting of the Oregon Coast, Mark learned to view the world through a lens of curiosity and opportunity from an early age. His father, Tom Utti, a self-made businessman, started in automotive mechanics and gradually expanded into various local businesses. As a child, Mark accompanied his father around town, pondering the potential of different locations and business ideas. This early exposure to entrepreneurial thinking set the foundation for Mark’s future endeavors running the family business.

Mark currently oversees 11 businesses spanning multiple industries, including an arcade, bumper cars, food and beverage, entertainment, property development, rental properties, signage, clothing, and bowling. His ventures are a testament to his ability to spot opportunities and his willingness to pursue them. For example, one of the family’s first major successes was transforming an arcade on Main Street in Seaside to arguably the biggest tourist attraction in the area. Timing was right for the once sleepy, small beach town. Seaside saw significant growth with the arrival of Worldmark in 2010, combined with the growth of Nike, Intel, and Washington County, the coast was now a quick drive from the Metro Area. Mark’s foresight and tenacity turned the arcade and other ventures into thriving businesses, showcasing his knack for identifying and capitalizing on potential.

Mark’s commitment to his community is unwavering and humility shines through in his philanthropic efforts. Depending on the season, he employs between 250 and 300 people and makes a concerted effort to know them personally, attending graduations and family events whenever possible.

His dedication to the community extends beyond employment; they offer a full-ride scholarship to Clatsop Community College annually and support local youth sports and activities through donations. He takes a ton of pride investing in youth sports with Seaside Kids and sponsoring employee causes that are important to them. One of his favorite ways to give back is supporting 4H and buying the animals the employees show. Whether it’s giving to employee causes or quietly investing in local initiatives, he doesn’t seek recognition for his contributions. His focus remains on making a positive impact locally, ensuring that his community thrives alongside his businesses.

Similarly, when it comes to business, Mark values simplicity and efficiency in his dealings, which is why he appreciates his partnership with Lewis & Clark Bank. When a large regional bank complicated a crucial deal, causing delays and frustrations, Mark turned to Jack Ficken, Relationship Manager at Lewis & Clark Bank. Jack’s straightforward approach and prompt decision-making ensured that Mark could seize the opportunity without unnecessary complications. “When your vision is complex, a bank should keep it simple. Lewis & Clark Bank was able to simplify what I was trying to accomplish so that I could focus on the project,” says Mark. This partnership exemplifies the bank’s commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs with personalized, efficient service.

Mark’s optimism for the future of Seaside, Warrenton, Astoria, and the rest of Clatsop County is evident. He praises the progressive leadership, abundant land, and beautiful surroundings that make the region a great place for business. As he continues to build housing and develop properties, Mark remains committed to the growth and prosperity of his community.

Today, his father, Tom, is 79 and still likes to go to trade shows every now and then, see the new things, and ask “What if?’’ Tom’s curiosity lives on in Mark. In Mark Utti’s world, curiosity isn’t just a trait—it’s a driving force that transforms dreams into reality. His story is a testament to the power of asking “What if?” and turning those questions into opportunities that benefit not only his businesses but also the community he calls home.
“When your vision is complex, a bank should keep it simple. Lewis & Clark Bank was able to simplify what I was trying to accomplish so that I could focus on the project.”
